Step by Step
Beginning Sunday, September 10th, a new series of sermons, Step by Step – The Way of Discipleship, will be our focus for 12 consecutive weeks. This series will explore the effective steps of AA and similar programs. These originated in biblical passages and thought. These we will explore in a helpful and practical way. This is a series for everyone! You may be surprised by what you learn. This would be a wonderful time to encourage others to come along.
The late Dallas Willard, a professor of philosophy at USC and one of the best Christian thinkers of our age, had this say in his wonderful book, Renovation of the Heart:
The familiar means of the traditional AA program—the famous “twelve steps” and the personal and social arrangements in which they are concretely embodied, including a conscious involvement of God in the individual’s life—are highly effective in bringing about personal transformation. Historically, the AA program was closely aligned with the church and Christian traditions, and now it has much to give back to the church that has largely lost its grip on spiritual formation as a standard path of Christian life. Any successful plan for spiritual formation, whether for the individual or group, will in fact be significantly similar to the Alcoholics Anonymous program.
Make the decision and commitment to attend each Sunday. You’ll be glad you did!
This site will be a place to continue the discussion, to learn more and to supplement the sermons. We also hope to place the discussion guides here, so check back often.
Think through and discuss the Mitchell Church of Christ's sermons that are a biblical reflection and view of AA's 12 Steps.
